Red light therapy + Co-enzyme Q10: A Mitochondrial Synergy

4 studies show increased efficacy of photobiomodulation when used in combination with supplemental Co-enzyme Q10, a critical cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain.


Both near-infrared (NIR) photobiomodulation (PBM) and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) administration are known to stimulate mitochondrial electron transport.


CoQ10 supplementation is held to improve mitochondrial function by promotion of ATP production (Hargreaves, 2014) and mitochondrial biogenesis (formation of new mitochondria) (Noh et al., 2013) and is one of the most significant lipid antioxidants.


Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish (such as salmon and tuna), organ meats (such as liver).


A typical CoQ10 dosage is 30 to 90 mg per day, taken in divided doses. Since co-q10 is fat soluble, it may be best taken with a fatty meal.


People who are on drugs that deplete Co-Q10 such as statin drugs may require higher doses. Please consult your physician.
